Styling Widget MDTF Taxonomies only

I've been trying to find how to style this widget but cant find anything meaningful.

I want to set the filter as multiple selection options as it is now. But have the selections visible at all times. How do I set the filter so that if a filter is clicked to expand the window, it stays open . . so that you can see what selections are being made ? I also notice that if there are more than 3 selection options this scroll bar appears and you have to scroll through the options. This isn't very attractive or practical.

Unfortunately, this type of taxonomy display does not have such a feature.
So how can I style the filter? I've got seven options from a Main Menu dropdown box none of which have any default options in them. To give me any indication as to what they are and what they do.
