exchange rates not updating

The exchange rates for my site are not updating and there are no error messages or any kind of diagnostic information being provided which is very concerning.
When I was trying the free version finance.yahoo.com was working just fine. As soon as I installed the paid version clicking update rates sets all rates except for the base one to blank with no error message. This is clearly a serious bug. If there's an issue there needs to be some information provided as a blank rate never makes sense.
So I got an API key for Free Currency Converter and that worked. I set the update to hourly and assumed all was well. This was 2 weeks ago.
Just now I have logged in and happened to click to manually update the rates, and it sets each rate to 'no data for'... !! This obviously means there's an error. But no information is provided.
clearly this also means that the rates have not been auto updating for an unknown amount of time, maybe never, with absolutely no indication of this serious problem given to me.
I'd like urgent help in fixing this functionality because the plugin provides none.

I have just discovered that this is actually causing the rates to be set to 0!! So someone could literally come into my shop and change the price of any product to nothing!!. Obviously I have disabled the plugin for now.
