At what point currency switcher will slow website down?

I've been using the currency switcher for a year now I think. I always knew currency switcher will have some impact on my website, but as my ecommerce grew the website has become quite slow with huge database. Checking info from newrelic the currency switcher has huge impact on performance.
Is there any tweaks I could make? Or perhaps the plugin can be customized for me with little cost? It's good out of the box plugin.

this plugin makes only one request to the database. And it cannot affect the loading of the site.
