Variations not showing on product descriptions

When I add variations, and click on the show variations button, the lines are displayed, but the description of each variation is the same as the product.
For example, I have a product"Watermelon Blob" which has 2 sizes (10&12) and 2 types (Barbed&Barbless). However, when I display the variations, I would expect to see"Watermelon Blob -10-barbed" etc. but it just shows"Watermelon blob" for each variation. I seem to remember fixing this by increasing the column width before, but the current version doesn't allow me to do that.
