Slow filtering

When updating the Woof products filter plugin from 2.2.6.4 to 2.2.8 we are experiencing an extreme change in filtering speed. In version 2.2.6.4 filtering works within a second most of the time.
After the update, it takes more than 30 seconds to filter. I've read the changelog, but I can't find an explanation for why it's slowing down so much.
I've already tried the options suggested here: https://products-filter.com/searching-is-slow, but those ain't changing anything.
What can we do to update to the newest version without our filters slowing down?
