Image extension with product categories > only top level categories?

is it possible to also display sub categories when using the image display option on WOOF products filter?
Because currently I can only assign images to the top level categories.
The hierarchical product category output with plus / minus signs doesnt seem to work with image option..
Is that right? How can I make it work?

I was able to make use of a workaround via attributes.
So I am using image product cats of parent categories and then added attributes terms that match their assigned subcategory names. This way I was able to add another filter, that can be used with AND condition.
Only question left: is it possible to display certain attributes conditionally based on selection of a specific product category?
