filter variable product by stock status

I cannot seem to filter variable products by stock status
If I filter by"in stock" or"out of stock" and hit filter it only displays simple products according to stock status. Does not display any variable products even if no product type filter selected.
If I select select product type"variable" with no stock status filter selected it filters to only variable products , but shows in stock and also out of stock products.
If I select product type"variable" and I choose"in stock" or"out of stock" for stock status it filters back 0 products.
Also, if my filter displays more than 1 page of products if I click go to page 2 of products it looses filters. I have to filter again then of course brings back to page 1. How do I get to page 2 other than select to display more items on page 1?

Variable product has no such value.
Try to filter by stock quantity from 0 to 0
