Click on category to trigger filter instead of filter button

Hi, I am trying to set the filter to where a user can just click on the category itself in order to select and trigger the filter. See this site for example.
I am using jQuery from this JSfiddle in order to convert the dropdown into actual buttons. I modified it a bit to add the class for the submit button to the new buttons - however, the issue is that when clicking on one of the categories, it triggers the filter as if no category is selected. I noticed that normally you would select a category, then a class called"selected" will get added to it, and then you would press the filter button in order to trigger the filter with that category selected. It seems like in this case, the filter is triggered on click before the"selected" class is added - is there any way to add the class on click and then trigger the filter? Or do you have any other suggestions for how to go about this issue? Thanks in advance.
