Checkboxes - JS clicks on the box but using the filter clears the checkbox

I have the filter on a page, when the page loads, I use Javascript to click on one of the checkboxes so that it is selected.
The problem is, when I click on another checkbox, then click the filter button, the first checkbox that JS clicked goes away.
Example:
I have a filter category called"size" which has the options, small, medium and large.
On load, JS clicks on"small".
I click on"medium" and click the filter button.
When the page loads,"small" is no longer selected, only"medium" is.

I found this woof_current_values = {}; being used to clear the filters.
Is it possible to use it to set the filters?
For example, on page load, I would like the search filter 'size' to have 'small' already selected.
