On my filter, I have 3 categories: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. If I select Beginner, I have to UNCHECK it before I can select Intermediate. Is there a way to select another category which would defaulted unselect the first one?

I will have to change from categories to tags then. But, I think this could work! Is there a way to have tags and sub-tags, so they can be grouped together as they are now?

Unfortunately I do not understand you
tags have no hierarchy - it cannot be grouped as categories
