Can't get the visibility of product attributes to work

Hi there,
I've been struggling with showing and hiding the product attributes in the Filter Widget.
Wether I exclude or inverse exclusion of certain product categories, the attribute filters just don't show and hide the way I want them to.
I have electronics with various attributes. The attribute filters should only show on the applicable category archive pages. But they just don't.
Attribute filters show on archive pages even if the products in that archive don't even use that attribute.
What am I missing here? Or doesn't the exclusion work for the widget?

it was on 2.2.4, now on 2.2.4.2.
It didn't help though; purchase code added.
